i walked up too the playground
where we used to play
and died away into a memory
where our fingers embraced
under the cedar trees
where the shrill hum of the lunch bell
beckoned us back
to our second grade classroom
we created our own world there
of grown-up kitchens and pet cats
but it was in that outside air
where we both found a friend
you were the only one back than
and i never felt the same again
we were only eight years old

than one night i found myself on our beach
sixteen years later
and i could see the glow of your city
a fading light far away
from the island where we grew up
and i felt so sad knowing you were gone
i wonder if your behind those other girls' eyes
and i wonder if i'm ever on your mind
and upon that beach where we used to walk
i found myself standing there with the ocean and the glow
wondering if you were looking back at me
